THE WORLD IN GESTURE : THE TRANSCULTURAL LANGUAGE of moving from
gesture/movement to performances and means of communication
In
this three-session workshop students will explore the language of gesture
drawn from Asian and Western theatrical styles. These gestures, when combined
with dance and martial arts movements (taichi, kuntao, karate, will help us
create a vibrant, engaging presentation that employs body first to communicate
emotion and action.
“Gesture
precedes word” is the rule of the French director Del Sartre, who is
credited with being the Father of Melodrama in the West. His dictum requires
the actors to inhabit the characters’ body first before speaking the lines.
We will use this process to get back to the way actors were trained in Asian
styles; learn the posture, the walk, the movement of the hands, the facial
expressions, before they sang or spoke. The actors feel the rhythm of his
character, so he stands out even on a crowded stage.
We
will focus on emotional moments to create characters and stories that can be
understood without text. Some will be drawn from plays and operas from both
Eastern and Western classics.
This
will benefit those who have been trained in a particular idiom or gestural
vocabulary but if you have not, come to create your own movement to do a
stylistic performance.

SERIOUS COMEDY - A WORKSHOP FOR ACTIVISTS
San
Francisco Mime Troupe is one of the oldest peoples’ theaters in the US. It
is known for its broad comic style and its sharp political satire. Using fast
paced stories and witty dialogue, the company’s mission since 1959 has been
to inspire the American people to change their government, its domestic and
foreign policy and to better serve the needs of the people of
America
and the rest of the world.
Comedy
can be a revolutionary form because laughter unites the audience in an
unplanned response. They laugh because they understand. Satire is like a very
bright light that we point at a problem, a conflict, and a political issue so
people can see it more clearly and decide to make a change. Comedy opens the
heart and plants new ideas in the brain. A transformation of Ideas comes
before a transformation Inaction.
In
this three-session workshop we will focus on hot button issues in Hong Kong.
We will deconstruct each issue to define the WHO; WHERE AND WHAT that best fit
the short satires we will create. Character comes first and we will invent
characters from real life models crossed with archetypes from around the
world. Where is always specific but without scenery we rely on body language
and mime to tell audience the location. What happens in the compact comedy is
key to make the audience get the message. We will draw plots from the Mime
Troupe’s works and other classic satires to accelerate the playmaking
process. And we will make it funny and relevant.
Come
ready for physical workout, intellectual challenge and leave with a short play
that will help you or your group express you burning issue.
