*Behn Cervantes’Storytelling featuring

Lino Brocka’s Ora Pronobis

Veteran Philippine director Behn Cervantes talks about the life and times of another highly respected director, Lino Brocka, amid the social upheaval of the 1970s under the dictatorship of president Ferdinand Marcos, to the late-1980s with the restoration of democracy and the rise to power of Corazon Aquino, a time when parts of the countryside were terrorised by civil-military death squads. The talk will be followed by the screening of Lino Brocka's controversial and highly regarded movie, "Orapronobis".

ORAPRONOBIS (1989): Directed by Lino Brocka

Initially banned by the administration of Philippines President Corazon Aquino, the movie was first screened in Cannes before getting a local distribution.

The opening scene where Major Kontra killed a priest, was based on an actual incident in 1985 where cult leader Norberto Manero brutally murdered Italian Catholic priest Father Tulio Favali. The celebrated work, which made it to the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes 1989, focuses on a highly controversial subject - a military invasion in a faraway Philippine province after the rise of Corazon Aquino as president in 1986 and the death and destruction it left in its wake.
